In our introduction to mould blowing class, we’ll work with both existing and home made moulds. To start, we’ll learn the correct form and heat for blowing into the mould, practicing on ex factory metal and wood blow moulds. We’ll then take objects that you bring in, and learn to make glassblowing moulds from them. Ever fancied a glass broccoli, ammonite, or washing up bottle vase? Using plaster, clay and graphite, we’ll transform common objects into usable glass vases in a range of contemporary colours.

We’ll also have an experimental session blowing into various materials, seeing what effect clay, metals and wet paper have on the glass. Students will cold work some of their glass, making sure they have functional pieces to take home.

The demonstrations will be informative, covering aspects of the history of mould blowing, and the traditional materials used. Students will leave with a good foundation of knowledge to continue to use moulds for blowing on their own.
